Richard Sonnenfeldt was the Berlin born 22 year old German Jewish chief translator at Nuremberg.

No one spent more time with the Nazi hierarchy than he did, although he had little experience, he had the backing of Wild Bill Donovan head of the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the C.I.A with a personal introduction from the Rockefeller

Foundation, his remit was to translate captured German documents and interview witnesses for the coming trials at Nuremberg.

Hundreds of hours were spent in the build up, with chief interrogator John Amen questioning again and again ambassador Joachim Von Ribbentrop, architect Albert Speer, Ernst Kaltenbrunner head of German security, and Rudolph Hess among others.

Richard Sonnenfelt’s parents were both Jewish doctors who suffered in the lead up to W.W.II and his brother Helmut would later become National Security Council advisor to Richard Nixon.

Richard claimed Herman Goering made this intriguing statement about Churchill;- “Naturally the common people don’t want war, neither in Russia or in England nor in America nor in Germany, but the people can be brought to the bidding of the leaders, that is easy, all you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, “ Tony Blair used this identical formula in Iraq.

Incidentally Rudolph Hess was drugged during the trial, spent time in the mental hospital at Abergavenny called Maintiff Court, where soldiers were told not to speak with him, but be continually abusive, lest he tell the truth about why he flew to Britain the katyn forest massacres and Churchill’s refusals of Hitler’s peace offers since 1940, both the doctor and dentist who attended Rudolph Hess would later claim the man at Spandau was not Hess, this caused an absolute furore at M.I 6. HQ.

Richard Sonnenfeldt, a skilful lover of board games, went on to help develop color TV, and worked on Nasa lunar computers and became an executive for NBC television, he died aged 86
