The Illuminate were a group out of 18th century Bavaria who were thinkers caught up in the Age Of Enlightenment who wanted to bring in new ideas and change the status quo (aristocacies, church ‘ state) in Europe. The Illuminati’s members pledged obedience to their superiors, and were divided into three main classes, each with several degrees. The order had its branches in most countries of the European continent; it had around 2,000 members over the span of 10 years. Rumours got going that they were trying to infiltrate all the governments of Europe as well as helping to facilitate the French Revolution. I time the group quarrelled amongst itself over leadership and succession and the Bavarian government in a secular edict brought the organization down . It lasted all of ten years.
In this day and age there are urban legends or conspiracy theories which say the group is alive and well governed by great industrial magnates who have a plan to dominate the world and all her events.
